Ask A Pastry Chef: What To Eat At BabyCakes NYC

So let's say that for health, moral, religious, or any other of a variety of reasons, you don't eat animal products. Not only do people assume that you're content to nosh on a big bowl of brown rice porridge topped with some organic greens—for every meal—but they assume you don't know what a good cookie tastes like.* Or at least that's what it feels like, if you've tried many vegan sweets on the market.

*If you've been following Kenji's monthlong voyage as a vegan, then you'll have seen him pose this question.

Well, to be scientific about it, it's plain hooey. And Erin McKenna, founder of BabyCakes in NYC, knows it. She started her Lower East Side bakery in the hopes of providing delicious doughnuts, cakes, cookies, muffins, and quick breads for people with dietary restrictions and allergies to wheat, gluten, dairy, casein, and eggs.

Then a funny thing happened: non-vegans ate there too. Now with locations in L.A and Orlando, BabyCakes is offering its same roster of sweets to a wider audience. Given that there is literally something for everyone, what should you order? We asked Erin for her top 5 picks. Click through the slideshow to see them all.
