Sugar Rush (Thanksgiving Edition): Two Great Pie Spots in DC

With everyone starting to throw up Christmas decorations like society collectively vomiting after shotgunning a tube of glitter with too many bowls of Fruity Pebbles for breakfast, it can only mean one thing: Thanksgiving is coming. And what better way to show how grateful you are for everything you've been blessed with than by stuffing your face full of pie? Luckily, DC has two great spots to get your pie fix.

First up is Pie Sisters in Georgetown. This little shop just across from the Key Bridge specializes in traditional pies, drawing from the titular sisters' family history of home pie making. Pies come in classic flavors like a double crusted Apple Pie and Coconut Cream. There are a few savory pies as well, including a Chicken Pot Pie and Pulled Pork Barbecue. Pies come as whole pies ($14) or slices, but you can also order individual sized Cuppies ($4). Cupcake sized and individually crusted, they're a fun spin on the cupcake craze with the homey comfort of a warm pie.

The Bourbon Chocolate Pecan (a specialty pie) is one of the most popular items. Made with bourbon infused pecans and vanilla with chocolate chips underneath, it's very rich and sweet. The bourbon really comes through and tastes great with the pecans. The obligatory Pumpkin Spice pie is the classic pumpkin pie, with hints of cinnamon and nutmeg, and it tastes just like Autumn.

If you're in the mood for something a little less conventional, head over to Dangerously Delicious Pies in the Atlas District on H Street. Dangerous takes the alternative route and offers an expansive rotating menu of eclectic flavors, available by slice ($7) or by whole pie ($30). The overwhelming favorite is the Baltimore Bomb. Densely packed with vanilla, buttermilk, short bread, fudge, and Berger Cookies, it's a shotgun blast of custardy flavor to the mouth.

Dangerous also has a healthy selection of savory pies, which are slightly more at $35 per pie. The standout here is the Steak, Mushroom, Onion, and Gruyere pie, otherwise known as the S.M.O.G. It's a hearty steak dinner mixed with cream in a pie. Simple, understated, but filling and delicious. Order a slice and it's served with a generous side salad.

If you're in need of a pie to bring to Thanksgiving dinner or just a quick fix, Pie Sisters and Dangerously Delicious Pies have you covered. Just don't put it off for too long. Pie Sisters requires 24 hour advance notice and Dangerously Delicious Pies requires 72 hours for orders.
