Apples and autumn are entirely synonymous. But instead of relying on apple pie, try this apple bread pudding from Southern Living: Classic Southern Desserts instead. It's creamy, crisp, and nicely spiced, with a plush caramel sauce to accompany it.
Tips: It seems inconsequential, but mixing a cup of apple cider with milk gives the entire pudding a delicate apple flavor, without the work of coring, chopping, and peeling loads of fruit. The purer the cider, the better. It's a neat trick that can extend to other apple-based desserts.
Tweaks: Perhaps the chill in the air was getting to me, but I substituted the milk in the pudding for half-and-half, and doubled the butter in the caramel recipe. I also used a combination of 1/2 cup brown and 1/4 cup white sugar to darken the flavor.
