With her big love for her Sicilian family, her background as an accessories buyer at Barneys New York, and the fact that her marriage proposal involved cookies that spelled out the words "Will you marry me?", it's kind of impossible not to love Dawn Casale, the one girl behind Brooklyn's One Girl Cookies bakery. Her story is a kind of sugary fairy tale: girl leaves the glamorous world of fashion to pursue her love of baking, girl opens a bakery, the bakery is a success, girl needs to hire help and help just happens to be the man that she's going to marry. (That would be David Crofton, Casale's partner and husband.) It's really almost too good to be true and so are the cookies.
Together, Casale and Crofton co-wrote One Girl Cookies, a wonderfully personal baking book that tells not only their story but the story of both of their families. These heartwarming tales are told with the help of many very good looking baked goods, each with a sentimental significance to the couple.
For the next two weeks, we're going to be baking our way through One Girl Cookies with a focus on—what else—cookies. We'll be sharing Sicilian-inspired Lemon, Olive Oil, and Almond Biscotti, Decadent Chocolate Coins, and a few more. Get excited: It promises to be a sweet couple of weeks here on Bake the Book.
