Glorious, versatile pie: is there another dessert with so much variety? With all number of flavors and fillings, with crusts varying from pure butter to salty pretzel. There is a pie for every taste: fruity, chocolatey, root vegetable-y. With this vast diversity in mind, we set out to track down the best pies San Francisco had to offer.
Intimidated by the sheer number of pies worth trying, we rallied a group of sweets-loving friends and an even greater number of pies in a room and took note of the various favorites. Unsurprisingly, many of these involved fresh, seasonal fruit (though the peach pies didn't fare so well in our taste-off). We allowed a few tarts to creep into our tasting, but they were so delicious that our tasters allowed the leniency. We avoided out-of-season pumpkin pies and while a sweet potato variety was liked, it wasn't loved. Much milk was consumed. And while we could not pick an overall favorite, we narrowed it down to 10 pies absolutely worth trying.
