San Francisco may get credit for its locavore tendencies and magnificent produce, but that doesn't mean we don't appreciate the fried things in life too. Like doughnuts. For a simple piece of fried dough, this sweet indulgence comes in so many shapes, sizes and flavors that when we began our round-up of San Francisco's best doughnut spots, our heads were spinning as we tried to decide where to begin.
But never fear, Serious Eaters, we stocked up on milk and busted out our stretchy pants to scour the city for the best places to satisfy your doughnut fix. We aimed for an even dozen but, as happens with doughnuts, we found that a thirteenth snuck onto our list. But really, a Baker's Dozen is always a good thing, particularly when it comes to doughnuts.
