Laura Togut 5 comments

Have you ever had a doughnut fresh from the fryer? The difference between a doughnut that was fried 10 minutes ago and one that was fried 30 seconds ago is unfathomable. That's what you can get at Back Door Donuts, and we got a peek at the process. More

We come to Serious Eats to discover new treats, but sometimes Serious Eaters comes to us with the goodies. After a local SE'ers Meet Up in Orange County, ArkyTrojan ran to his car and 'forced' us into a Donuttery sampling party in the parking lot. The clear favorite: the Blueberry Donut.

Staff Picks: Our Favorite Doughnuts

The Serious Eats Team 27 comments

Everyone knows the old gag about policemen eating doughnuts and coffee everyday— but if you really stop to think about it...why not? We'd happily eat a hot out of the fryer, sugar-coated ring of dough every day if we could. Well, maybe if they were from a few select places, like these, our favorite doughnut shops from Philly to San Francisco, Nantucket and beyond! More

Bake the Book: Raspberry Doughnuts with Vanilla Dipping Sauce

Emma Kobolakis Post a comment

It doesn't get much simpler or more indulgent than a fresh doughnut. Being able to make your own is a must for any aspiring home pastry chef. Old School Comfort Food shares chef Alex's recipe for fluffy, sugar-encrusted doughnuts filled with tangy jam and accompanied by a creamy vanilla sauce. It took her dozens of attempts to develop a method that, according to her, works every time. You just need to make it once. More

Katherine Sacks 13 comments

While you can find doughnuts at nearly every bäckerei, corner store, and train station in Berlin, including an unfortunate proliferation of Dunkin' Donuts, we suggest skipping the tourist stands. Instead try these five family-run bakeries which are a true step above the rest. More

American Classics: Persian Buns

American Classics Alexandra Penfold 5 comments

There are few childhood treats that were as special to me as Persian Buns, a deep-fried, chocolate frosted cinnamon bun, that I've only ever encountered in a small bakery in Camden, Maine. Alas, the Camden Home bakery has long since shut its doors and it's been years since I've had one of these addictive treats, but I think I've cracked the code on how to make them at home. More

Sugar Rush: Coffee Roll at Kane's Donuts, Saugus, Massachusetts

Kate Shannon 3 comments

Coffee rolls are what would happen if a cinnamon roll, an apple cider donut, and a coffee cake had a baby. An enormous, super sugary baby. The version at Kane's is tops. More

First Look: Union Square Donuts; Somerville, MA

Kate Shannon 4 comments

Union Square Donuts is definitely not a mom-and-pop doughnut joint. It's housed in Kitchen, Inc., the shared commercial cooking space in Union Square. There's a folding table instead of a counter and though it all looks a little impermanent, the place is buzzing with energy. The staff, almost all of whom are wearing beanies and plaid, are friendly and look like they might just glaze doughnuts to the beat of Sam Cooke and French love songs even when they're not working. Snapshots From Brightest Young Thing's Donut Fest, Washington D.C

Brian Oh Post a comment

This past Saturday, Brightest Young Things held their first annual DC Donut Fest. Held at Penn Social, the sold out event featured all you can eat doughnuts (while they lasted) from all the major doughnut purveyors in the area including Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken, GBD and Poste. Take a look at the doughnut feeding frenzy and some of BYT's characteristic oddities (like a solitary, vaguely androgynous dancer on stage clutching a giant inflatable doughnut). More
