Who doesn't love pie? The mixture of flaky crust and rich filling makes for a sophisticated yet comforting dessert. Sadly, I don't eat enough pie. I'm not a baker, and I rarely find myself at restaurants with slices for sale. But today is March 14th, and you know what that means: Pi Day. I would be abdicating in my duty as an eater to not find some pie today. Fortunately, New York has great options. Here are a few of our favorite places to get our pie on in the city.
Four and Twenty Blackbirds
Sisters Emily and Melissa Elsen came to Brooklyn by way of South Dakota, where they learned to make pie in their family restaurant. The training paid off, and the pair are making great double-crust pies in their Gowanus shop. The salted caramel apple is a great choice this time of year, but when it's in season the apple rhubarb shouldn't be missed.
Yura on Madison
Yura's pumpkin pie came out on top when we tested Thanksgiving options, and thankfully it's available year-round. If pumpkin isn't your thing, know that the rest of the options here are strong too. The blueberry pie is one of our absolute favorite pies in the city. Pi Day cruelly doesn't fall in blueberry season, but keep this one in mind for later in the year.
Need even more pumpkin? The version at Red Hook bakery Baked has a mild pumpkin filling with a crust that really sets it apart. Made of whole wheat, it's dense and delicious. It's not for everyone, but is definitely worth checking out. They're also one of the last places you can always find Mississippi Mud Pie.
Lee Lee's Baked Goods
This Harlem bakery makes wonderful rugelach cookies, but on Pi Day go for the lemon mini-pie. About six inches in diameter, it features a buttery, blistered crust and a thick, tangy curd. There's an apple pie to check out too, and neither will be hurt by a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Steve's Authentic Key Lime Pies
After a seemingly endless winter, who wouldn't want a taste of warmer climes? The Key lime pie at Steve's is a little taste of sunnier days. Red Hook is a hike from most parts of the city, but it's a lot closer than Florida. Tip: While the pies can be found across the city, it's worth making the trip to the bakery for the Swingle, a chocolate-dipped pie on a stick.
Two Little Red Hens
Two Little Red Hens does a variety of baked goods, focusing on cakes and cupcakes. The pies are great too, though. The chocolate-banana cream pie is overwhelming in a good way—banana slices are topped by a mountain of whipped cream, chocolate shavings, and powdered sugar. Their pumpkin pie is also worth seeking out. It's a boozy version of the Thanksgiving classic.
The cupcakes at Robicelli's have a cult following. Husband-and-wife team Matt and Allison Robicelli bake great treats in their Bay Ridge store. We've been happy with the Creamsicle pie, but chances are whatever you find in the store will be good. To celebrate Pi Day, the bakery's doing an extended menu of ten pies today and this weekend while supplies last.
