If you're magnetically drawn towards the ice cream section of your local grocery store, you may have noticed something exciting: Ben and Jerry's "Cores", a new line-up of premium ice cream that features two different flavors separated by a filling of smooth fudge, soft caramel, or fruity jam.
Here's an overview of the four flavors:
- Peanut Butter Fudge: Chocolate and peanut butter ice creams with mini peanut butter cups and a peanut butter fudge core
- Salted Caramel: Sweet cream ice cream with blonde brownies and a salty caramel core
- Hazed & Confused: Chocolate and hazelnut ice creams with fudge chips and a hazelnut fudge core
- That's My Jam: Raspberry and chocolate ice creams with fudge chips and a raspberry core
I found all of the Cores in stock at Target ($3.89 each). Scroll down for a closer look at each one.
You really can't go wrong with the Peanut Butter Fudge. The subtle nuttiness of the peanut butter ice cream is the perfect compliment to the rich chocolate ice cream, and the mini peanut butter cups buried within both sides are like little treasures. They add to the overall appeal of the pint, but don't steal focus like some mix-ins. Taken individually, both ice cream flavors are excellent, but together, with some of the creamy, peanut butter fudge core, it's mind-blowing.
Salted Caramel is definitely the sweetest of the flavors. It's also the only pint in the new line that contains a singular flavor: sweet cream ice cream. The sweet, milky base, chewy bits of blondies, and super soft salted caramel core make this flavor triple-sweet, but the undertones of brown sugar in the blondies and a pinch of salt in the caramel core introduce some contrast and complexity. If you're a fan of all things caramel and butterscotch, this flavor is tailor-made for you. If you're intrigued by the idea of a caramel core but want something more balanced, go with the Karamel Sutra, which pairs sweet cream ice cream with chocolate fudge chip with a smooth, un-salted caramel core.
The Hazed & Confused was my favorite of the four flavors, edging out the Peanut Butter Fudge by a hair. The rich chocolate ice cream features crunchy fudge chips and is the perfect partner for the smooth and simple hazelnut ice cream, which has buttery, nutty, and sweet undertones. Ben and Jerry's could have quit right there and had a huge hit on their hands, but they didn't. Adding the hazelnut fudge core makes the pint even more decadent and significantly more delicious. It's like a Nutella sundae. Yeah, you need this.
That's My Jam is like an amped-up version of Cherry Garcia. The pint pairs smooth chocolate ice cream and raspberry ice cream with fudge chips. Taken by itself, the raspberry ice cream is mildly fruity (much like the cherry ice cream in Cherry Garcia), but all of that changes when you dip into the raspberry jam core. It's so intense, I almost dropped my spoon in excited alarm. A little goes a long way, but because the jam is in a contained area, not swirled throughout the tub, you're in control of how much you get in each bite.
There's a lot to love about the new Ben and Jerry's Cores. Getting two flavors in the same tub is a bonus in itself, but when you factor in the fudge, jam, or caramel, that's when things get really awesome. The Cores taste like a two-scoop sundae (minus the whipped cream and cherry), and they're really fun to eat since the design lets you make every bite slightly or significantly different.
I expected to taste the new line-up and have a strong preference towards one flavor, but all four are delicious.
