Sugar Rush: Mocha Cake at L.A. Burdick, Boston
Though it's more commonly sought out for its decadent offering of hot chocolates, bonbons, and chocolate bars, I recently made a visit to L.A. Burdick in Boston in pursuit of one thing: the Mocha Cake ($4).
Tucked in Back Bay, the chocolate shop and café is hard to miss with its distinctive tiled roof and brown striped awning. The interior is bustling but cozy, with tables lining the walls, and display cases set up for customers to oggle at.
When I received my piece of cake, it was a pleasure to the senses before I even took a bite. Composed of ten distinct layers, the pastry is made up of espresso soaked biscuits, coffee butter cream, dark chocolate ganache, and a final dusting of cocoa powder. The combination of fudgy and delicate textures makes each bite a little different from the last, and the varying degrees of mocha flavor leave you feeling satisfied (but not overwhelmed) by the richness of the cake.
Today you can order many of L.A. Burdick's products online, though for their hot chocolate and some of their specialty confections, including the mocha cake, you'll have to visit one of the four locations in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, or New York.
