Mindy Segal's Top Picks for Valentine's Day Sweets in Chicago
When we reached out to Mindy Segal (owner of Mindy's Hot Chocolate in Chicago), for some top sweets to savor on Valentine's Day, we assumed her wish list would feature all things chocolate, but that wasn't the case. Instead of the standard suspects, Mindy's Valentine's Day dessert picks range from soft serve ice cream kissed with cinnamon and caramel to salty-sweet Basque cake, proving that there are more ways to mark the holiday than with the standard chocolatey sweets.
So, which Chicago-area treats have a special place in her heart? Scroll down to find out.
Olive Oil and Chocolate Cocotte from Avec: This is pure gooey, chocolate-y goodness. It's one of their incredibly popular menu items, and it looks as delicious as it tastes!
Vietnamese Cinnamon-Caramel Soft Serve from Belly Shack: This soft serve is an inventive, refreshing treat. It's always the perfect way to end a meal at Belly Shack.
Sour Cream Donuts from Munster Donut: This place is open 24 hours a day (except for a few holidays), so you can almost always quench any doughnut craving. Their sour cream doughnuts are a particular favorite of mine and one of the signature recipes that they're known for!
Amanda Rockman's Basque Cake from The Bristol: The Basque Cake has the perfect blend of sweet and salty. It's less dense than a traditional Basque cake, so you don't feel weighed down after eating it.
Biscuits with butter and jam from Bang Bang Pie Shop: These biscuits are the best. They're dense and buttery and also vegetarian. They've created a style that's separate from the traditional "southern biscuit," so they're the go-to for the "mid-western" biscuit experience.
Pretzel Chocolate Chip Cookies from Bake: They have all sorts of sweets at Bake, including everything from cakes and pastries to popsicles. These cookies are one of my favorites on their menu—just delicious.
From her own shop, Mindy's pick is hot fudge and smoked almond rugelach. She'll be making a special batch of heart-shaped cookies in honor of V-Day.
