Slideshow: Big Gay Ice Cream Revamps Their Menu, Adds New Items

Key lime curd
Key lime curd

If you enjoy the flavor of Key lime, you will enjoy this topping, it's a simple as that. For me, the thick, tangy, and tart lemon curd is the perfect compliment to the sweet ice cream. If you combine it with the new graham crumble in the Mermaid sundae, you can experience all the flavors (and most of the textures) of Key lime pie over vanilla ice cream (As a topping $1, or in Mermaid Sundae $5.98)

The new house-made graham crumbs are the perfect addition to any of the ice cream dishes where a little extra texture is needed. Both Gobblers come standard with this topping ($1)

Whiskey walnuts topping
Whiskey walnuts topping

The whiskey walnuts is another excellent addition to the array of premium toppings available at Big Gay. This "wet" topping of walnuts in a great tasting whiskey syrup was definitely designed with adults in mind. There's plenty of bitter whisky flavor to balance out the syrup. This was best with vanilla or the unflavored sweet cream base. One of the team said, "This is just really good—not sickly sweet, just a nice distinct walnut flavor". ($2)

Apple Gobbler
Apple Gobbler

The Apple Gobbler sundae is made of vanilla ice cream, apple butter, bourbon butterscotch, graham crumbs, and whipped cream. One of the team called it the perfect "pie a la mode". This was probably the overall favorite of the group. Although we generally liked the real fudge sundae just as much, the Apple Gobbler has flavors that are unique, like bourbon butterscotch. This bittersweet sauce made for the perfect adult topping. It sweetens the sundae but also balances the sweet with some bitter

The apple butter was also delicious—not too sweet and with a nice apple flavor. Combined with the graham crumbs, the apple butter really made this feel like eating a pie. ($5.98)

Pumpkin Gobbler
Pumpkin Gobbler

The Pumpkin Gobbler sundae is made of vanilla ice cream, pumpkin butter, maple syrup, graham crumbs, and whipped cream. This sundae is similar to the Apple Gobbler but has less distinct flavors. One member of the team said, "It doesn't have as much pumpkin flavor. It's more sweet and syrupy than "pumpkin-y". They group liked the maple syrup, but thought it needed something to balance it out—maybe more alcohol? ($5.98)

The Italian Affo'gay'to starts with Big Gay's house blend coffee and adds vanilla ice cream and whipped cream. If you're a coffee person looking for the least sweet ice cream offering from Big Gay, this coffee float is the thing ($5.00)

Egg Nog
Egg Nog

The Egg Nog soft serve split the group, but probably because there was an issue of liking or not liking egg nog in the first place. I like egg nog and so thought it was an excellent recreation of the flavors. Order this if you like the flavor of nog on its own, but don't expect it to convert you to the nutmeg flavored drink. ($3.75 includes sprinkles and dip)
