Slideshow: The Best Sweets We Ate in October

Chocolate Chip Sponge Cake from Kam Hing Coffee Shop, NYC

"I love Kam Hing Coffee Shop's plain sponge cakes, but I might like their new chocolate chip sponge cakes even more. It's the same great pillowy-soft cake with a hint of bittersweet chocolate flavor, and a dollar well spent." —Robyn Lee, AHT editor and staff photographer

Honeycomb Toffee from Aigner Chocolates, NYC
Honeycomb Toffee from Aigner Chocolates, NYC
"I love a good honeycomb toffee (even if others are less inclined) and Aigner Chocolates in Forest Hills makes the best I've had in a long time. The honeycomb pattern is firm and surprisingly regular, not too sweet beneath its snappy chocolate shell, and touched with just a taste of honey flavor. I wouldn't mind another package of these landing on my desk."—Max Falkowitz, NY Editor

PB&J Meringue at Blue Smoke, NYC
PB&J Meringue at Blue Smoke, NYC
"This hedgehog-looking creation is not a work of conceptual art; it's actually a PB&J meringue at at Blue Smoke, a Danny Meyer barbecue restaurant I visited for a special Ommegang beer and barbecue pairing dinner a few weeks ago. I'm glad I didn't stuff myself on 'cue, though, because I would have missed out on this glorious dessert, which is filled with scoops of peanut butter ice cream and Concord grape granita. It's as much fun to eat as it is to look at."—Jamie Feldmar, Managing Editor

Caramel Apple Crumb Bars
Caramel Apple Crumb Bars
"I make a lot of recipes for Serious Eats so it takes a really good one for me to stop and think, wow, this is the best thing I've made in recent memory. What can I say, I had a vision for caramel + apple + crumble, and it worked out beautifully. Seriously, here's the recipe, now try making them at home."—Carrie Vasios, Sweets Editor

Whatchamacallit Bar
Whatchamacallit Bar
""Thanks to this month's Why Have I Never Tried series, I had my first taste of a Whatchamacallit bar. I'm not a huge candy person, so I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed it. Crisp, crunchy, chewy, sweet, salty, nutty—it's got just about everything I look for in a sweet."—Niki Achitoff-Gray, Associate Editor

S'mores Cookie at the Cravory, San Diego
S'mores Cookie at the Cravory, San Diego
"The Cravory really nailed their featured flavors for October, the majority of which were inspired by beloved chocolate treats. But the cookie that really got me was the pumpkin s'mores—a wily interloper among the candy bar crowd. The pumpkin chai dough has the perfect balance of pumpkin and spice, and the mix-ins (graham crackers, mini marshmallows, caramel and smooth milk chocolate chunks) took this cookie from classic to seriously crave-worthy. The best part was the texture. The cookies are so tender that it tastes like they were engineered to stay in the oven for the exact time it takes them to transform from dough into a fully baked cookie (and not one millisecond longer). You can buy them by the dozen, but presumably only until the end of today. I say go for it. They're packed in pairs and freeze well, so there's no hurry to eat the whole dozen in one sitting, not like that would be difficult."—Erin Jackson, Contributing Editor, AHT/San Diego Contributor
