In Savannah, Leopold's is a local institution—an ice cream shop frozen in time, where not much has changed since it opened in 1919. According to the history of the shop, some of the fixtures, including the soda fountain and a wooden phone booth, were part of the original location, which was opened by three brothers in 1919, and closed in 1969. In 2004, the son of the youngest Leopold reopened the shop with his wife in a new location, on Broughton Street next to the Trustees Theatre.
Certain flavors, like lemon custard and tutti fruitti, a pink-tinted flavor with candied fruit (pineapple, red and green cherries) and pecan pieces mixed in, are made using the original recipes, but I went another direction, nabbing a scoop of chocolate chewies and cream for $3.75.
It was a good call. The ice cream is dense, rich, and silky, with pieces of fudge brownie and toasted pecans studded throughout. I found myself digging through the scoop for these hidden treasures, but there wasn't one bite that didn't have at least one chewy or crunchy nugget buried within. My only regret is not getting a second scoop. For a dollar more, you might as well.
Along with the two dozen regular flavors, there are also a few special seasonal flavors that change monthly. For example, huckleberry cheesecake is one of the featured flavors for November.
