The butter-laden, brilliantly spiced pastries at Sofra Bakery and Cafe have already been well documented on Serious Eats. But the Boston area's most celebrated Middle Eastern bakery is also its youngest. There's a cluster of local sweets shops that have been pedaling traditional Levantine pastries for decades with an equally loyal following.
Naturally, I was psyched to earn the assignment to check out the scene, but also wary. Temping as those sweets are, I wondered if writing a story about local Middle Eastern bakeries might yield a rather monotonous and competitive collection of baked goods—a battle of the baklavas, if you will.
I needn't have worried. While all the shops produces a similar array of sweets, each one makes at least one item that's unique to its kitchen, or that's simply a stunning example of that particular pastry. Click through the slideshow and see for yourself—and please sound off with your favorites!
