Edd Kimber, known in the UK as "The Boy who Bakes" and the creator of the eponymous award-winning blog, has just released his second cookbook, Say It With Cake, in the US. It's a bright and cheery volume filled to the gills with cakes of every shade and suited to any occasion.
What makes Say It with Cake so charming is its design. The recipes are printed on paper meant to mimic the butter-smudged, coffee-ringed pages so ubiquitous in an earnest cook's kitchen. In some instances, you can almost glimpse the handwritten notes that went into developing each sweet; it's a hompesun aesthetic that's instantly engaging and disarmingly warm. There are plenty of photos to guide you through some of Edd's more complicated designs, all of which are worth the attempt.
Beyond aesthetics, there's flavor. Every cake in the book looks clever, and tastes better. There's a S'Mores Cake that looks like it's just been roasted, a Red Velvet Cheesecake that takes the best of red velvet cake and whips it into an ultra-creamy dessert, and a refreshing Blackberry and Mint Cake to cool the palate as summer winds down.
All of these will be featured, plus one more, the messily elegant Tiramisu Charlotte. From birthdays to holidays, weddings and anniversaries, don't hesitate to Say It With Cake.
