With the opening of Bottega Italiana in the Westfield UTC mall, San Diego's frozen dessert scene got a big boost. The Seattle import, whose other location is in the Pike Place Market, slings artisanal gelato and sorbetto, made fresh each day.
My eyes briefly passed over the two dozen (or so) flavors in the case, locking on a tub of mojito sorbetto. It's deeply refreshing—almost bracingly so—like a supercharged frozen cocktail (minus the rum) that's packed with intense flavors of real mint and fresh-squeezed lime juice. A single scoop will set you back $3.75, but, I'd do it as a double ($4.75) with a scoop of strawberry gelato. Adding a smoother, more mellow scoop to the mix is a better way to showcase the invigorating properties of the mojito sorbetto and also guards against flavor fatigue by introducing a creamier, contrasting texture.
Want something minty but not as aggressive? Go for the mint chocolate gelato. It's mellow enough to eat solo, but even better with a bottom layer of dark chocolate gelato.
