It was probably only a minute or two, but deciding between the key lime pie and something more berry-related at Pie, a Seattle pie shop that stocks both sweet and savory flavors, felt like it took eons. Cream pies are a big draw (the shop also offers peanut butter, chocolate, and coconut cream), but a fruity pie seemed like it would be lighter. If you find yourself in a similar position, allow me to steer you towards the Berry Awesome pie ($4.50). Under that crisp crumble, it's got all the berries: strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, and blackberries.
The crust is everything you could hope it to be: crisp, buttery, and flaky, but instead of the standard presentation (a relatively thin layer of fillings), the pies here are decidedly deep-dish.
When the filling is this good, that's a great thing. What I loved best about the Berry Awesome is how rustic it was. The preparation of the filling was straightfoward, which allowed the berries to shine on their own merit. Most bites were raspberry or blackberry heavy, but dig around a bit and you can unearth a warm, juicy nugget of strawberry. The only mistake I made was not opting for ice cream. All of those jammy berries, not to mention the sweet syrup they secrete, really called for a scoop of vanilla.
