Cookie Queen Chickie Massa and her staff of bakers have been delighting Portlanders since 2009 with a host of homemade cookies. Before the retail shop opened in February of this year, the cookie company was stocking their wares in local retailers like Lamb's, Zupan's, New Seasons, and Market of Choice (which they continue to do), but trust me, you want to go straight to the source.

There are a few important advantages of visiting the shop, which also houses the commercial bakery. First, because cookies are constantly being baked, it smells insanely good inside, especially during the early morning, when the intoxicating aroma of brown butter hangs in the air. Also, since everything is sold individually, you get to mix and match bars ($3 each), cookies ($2 each, $8.50/6, $15.99/12), and brownies ($3 each). But most the most important factor is the cookie bar.

Oh yes, the cookie bar: a row of pretty plates fully stocked with samples. You can literally taste every item on offer before you buy. Want to take a closer look at all of the cookies offered at Blue Bird? Check out the slide-show above.
