Ask A Pastry Chef: What to Eat at The Plant Cafe Organic, San Francisco
With a menu that's stacked with more vegetables than their fresh juice bar, I hope I can be forgiven for not knowing quite what the deal was with the Plant Cafe Organic. "You thought it was vegan, didn't you?" I was asked when I came to sample the chefs' favorite desserts, and when I hesitantly nodded, I was gently corrected. "The Plant actually does fish and poultry. It's just about using fresh, organic ingredients, and local when possible."
One look at the dessert menu quickly proved the point. There was ice cream made with Blue Bottle coffee and cake made with TCHO chocolate—both Blue Bottle and TCHO are the Plant's neighbors on the Embarcadero. That's not to say there isn't a raw cashew cheesecake on the menu, because there is, and it's one of Executive Chef Sascha Weiss and Pastry Chef Susanne Stampke's favorite desserts.
