In Phoenix, Karsh's Bakery is the spot for traditional Jewish baked goods. The shop has been creating Kosher treats like rugelach, kichel, hamantashen, and challah since the early 1960s, along with pareve (or parve) items, cakes, and Danish-style pastries.
I initially planned on scoring a big bag of chocolate rugelach, but once I set eyes on a plate of German Chocolate brownies , there was no going back.
"Fudgy" is a word that gets thrown around a lot when describing brownies, but this particular dense, baked chocolate square embodies the adjective more than most. It's so rich and fudgy that the only resistance you'll find to your teeth sliding right through it are the walnuts, which are sparsely portioned, to provide just enough crunch, without detracting from the pure chocolate pleasure.
On top, there's a layer of chocolate frosting covered by German chocolate frosting, and a scribble of dark chocolate, just for good measure. It's plenty big enough to share, and at just $3, a totally irresistible indulgence.
Tip: Eat what you can right away. The blazing Phoenix sun quickly turns this oh-so-fudgy brownie to just plain fudge quickly—not that it's any less delicious in a melted state.
