Sugar Rush: A Couple of Gulab Jamuns at Curry Up Now, San Francisco
Like seemingly everyone else on the planet right now, I love food trucks. When you stumble on one, it's an unexpected treat of delicious food at (usually/ideally) rock bottom prices. The flip side of that coin is, of course, locating the darn thing. If it's an actual roving truck, that means that when a certain craving hits, you can't be assured satisfaction. That's why I was happy to see San Francisco's beloved Curry Up Now truck open a brick and mortar store on Valencia Street.
At the restaurant, Curry Up Now kept that ideal combination of reasonable prices and great food, which, given the portion sizes, means it can be hard to save room for dessert. But I'd advise getting a couple of Gulab Jamuns ($3) anyway. (By the way, that's verbatim: the menu reads "A Couple Of Gulab Jamuns", which I love).
And that's what you get: two balls of milk dough that are fried and doused in a sweet syrup. The Gulab Jamuns are soft and moist—there is no breading or crust, just squishy dough. Equally key, they're not greasy or suffering from an overly thick, goopy syrup. Sliced almonds add a nice bit of texture and their flavor helps to highlight the floral scent of cardamom. For a fried dessert, these are pretty light, and after the first bite I don't think you'll have a problem finding room.
