First Look: Spring Desserts at Beauty & Essex, NYC
After a long, gray winter, signs of spring are finally popping up in New York City: Brooklyn's magnolia trees have unfurled their gorgeous pink-and-white blossoms; Bryant Park is full of lunchtime picnickers and sunbathers; and in restaurants across town, pastry chefs are unveiling lighter, fresher dessert menus.
At Beauty & Essex, chef Chris Santos's clubby pawn shop-slash-lounge on Essex Street on the Lower East Side, pastry chef Jaime Sudberg said she was excited to be serving up flavors like lemon and blueberry in four new seasonal desserts.
"At this time of year, you want get away from the winter pears and apples and eat something bright," she said.
Sudberg has added pistachio baklava, blueberry crumble, milkshake shots, and a peanut butter crème brûlée to Beauty & Essex's dessert menu, which also features such comfort food items as vanilla doughnuts, chocolate bread pudding, and butterscotch pot de crème.
