Sugar Rush: Macarons at Tavern, Los Angeles

The take-away case at Tavern is stuffed with so many sweets—from cakes by the slice to sticky buns and scones (not to mention two types of chocolate chip cookies: crisp and chewy)—that I was momentarily paralysed with competing cravings. And because "everything" was not an acceptable answer to "what should I choose?", I had to rely on my instincts and go with the first item that made my sugar senses tingle: French macarons. Luckily, my instincts served me well. Tavern makes some mean macarons, and at $1.50 apiece (less than you'll pay for an hour of parking privileges at the meter), you might as well try them all.

The four flavors that were stocked during my visit were hazelnut, vanilla, pistachio, and chocolate with salted caramel. All were worthy, but I liked the vanilla and chocolate caramel the best because they had smoother fillings and a lighter texture not complicated by toasty bits of nuts, like the two other flavors.


All four of the macarons had a crisp outer shell, but underneath the shell, the cookie was more substantial than most macarons, with a chewy texture. The most ardent of macaron groupies might be better served at 'Lette Macarons, nearby in Beverly Hills, but I liked how Tavern's take on the French cookie was less precious, with a bit more staying power.
