Bake the Book: The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen
This isn't the Lee Brothers' first rodeo. Their earlier cookbooks, Simple, Fresh, Southern and The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook, both award-winning volumes, have cemented their place in the modern Southern food cannon. Just like its paginated siblings, Lee Bros Charleston Kitchen has joined the chronicles of smart, simple, down-home cooking that is as delicious as it is approachable.
The brothers have narrowed their focus to Charleston, South Carolina, in an effort to portray the food and culture of the Holy City, the very place that inspired them to start their careers in food. Our feature focuses on the luscious, history-rich desserts tucked away at the end of the volume (though eagerness to skip to dessert doesn't mean you should skip the vibrant recipes in the front, either). The recipes, combined with interviews, walking tours, and personal stories, ensure that the Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen lives up to honoring the city in its name.
We begin with Sweet Benne Wafers. Benne, or sesame seeds, are found in both savory and sweet preparations—this one is decidedly sugary. And what would a Southern dessert feature be without Caramel Cake?
