Sugar Rush: Upside Down Strawberry Crisp at Marlowe, San Francisco
I did my best to try to convince my fellow diners that ordering the strawberry crisp was a bad choice. "It's not strawberry season guys," I said, pointing to the other, fruit-free desserts. But they wouldn't listen to me, and I'm glad they didn't.
One of the selections from the "Desserts Served In A Jar" section of the menu, this crisp is worth it for the big scoop of bourbon ice cream alone. After a meat-heavy meal (Marlowe is known for the burger, but it's hard to go wrong with any of the rich, rustic dishes) you'll long for something cold and boozy.
Despite its gimmicky feel (what isn't served in Mason jars these days?) I was a fan of the dessert's presentation because it made the dish fun to eat in an exploratory, trifle-like way. You have to dig your spoon to the bottom to get a bit of the cold, creamy, dairy-rich ice cream, some of the crunchy, buttery crisp topping, some of the sweetened strawberries, and some of the smooth, toffee flavored caramel sauce. Overall, this managed to marry a summer dessert with some cozy winter flavors, and I only wish I could take a jar to go.
