Extraordinary Desserts is all about over-the-top, practically otherworldy desserts. Gold leaf, flower petals, and twirly flourishes of chocolate are as common as baking powder and cake flour here. It takes a very special occasion for me to pull the trigger on one of the cakes or tarts peacocking for attention, but the cookies are a different story, particularly the fruited oatmeal ($2.50).


This substantial cookie is crammed with an assortment of dried fruit, which can include apricots, cherries, pineapple, and golden raisins. There's so much fruit, it's verging on trail mix territory—and you could make a strong case for it being a legitimate breakfast food. As a whole, the cookies are substantially less sweet than the cakes, which is a good thing, because you can eat a couple of them without risking a sugar overdose.

Though this cookie is fairly moist, it really cries out to be eaten alongside a cup of sweet, milky tea (which I found out the hard way). Luckily, a whole page of the menu devoted to different types. The birthday tea, described as being "reminiscent of a warm out-of-the-oven cookie with strong caramel and vanilla notes" would pair well with the subtle kiss of cinnamon in the cookie.
