I feel like I must start any review of vegan sweets with a disclaimer, which is that I hold vegan sweets to the same standards as any other, animal product-full treat. But despite the fact that I personally like my cookies with a glass of milk, I'm truly happy to see vegan bakeries proliferate. Everyone deserves good desserts, and having spent many years as a vegetarian, I can understand how frustrating it can be to find good food to eat. In short: equality but encouragement, I say.
Isabella's Cookie Company doesn't solely sell vegan cookies, and I can't speak to any of the "regular" sweets. I did try four cookies from their vegan line: chocolate chip, chocolate chocolate chip, peanut butter, and oatmeal with chocolate chips.
The first thing that jumped out at me was the size and shape of the cookies.
Each bag held thick, irregular cookies, and since you eat with your eyes first, it was a good start. While the oatmeal with chocolate chips was overpowered by cinnamon, the other three flavors were pretty good. All were thick, dense, and chewy. The chocolate chip cookie had an almost under-baked quality which made it taste like a block of brown sugar-forward chocolate chip cookie dough. I won't pretend there aren't a ton of people out there who wouldn't love to find that quality in a cookie. The peanut butter cookie was similarly intense—fans of straight-up peanut butter will appreciate that these are all about the PB—sweet yes, but more nutty and rich. Still, with their density and size, these were both so intense that it was hard to get through a whole cookie.
The only cookie that was both intense but, for me, still easily downable was the chocolate cookie with chocolate chips. This cookie is almost brownie-like, with a rich cocoa flavor and lots of dark chocolate pieces. This cookie gets a bright hit of salt, which makes it rich but addictive. They'd satisfy any chocoholic's cravings.
At 200 calories a cookie, though, maybe it's a good thing the cookies are so rich. You could eat half and be satisfied, vegan or not.
