Sugar Rush: Jane's Oat Cake at Jane, San Francisco
Traditional Scottish oatcakes are thinnish disks of baked oats that usually measure a quarter to half inch in height. Jane's Oatcake ($3.50), on the other hand, is a comparative oaty skyscraper reaching 4 inches high.
The server at Jane described the sweet as being like granola, but I'd say it's just as easily compared to baked oatmeal. Oats are mixed with dried fruit, walnuts, and a ton of flax seeds, then flavored with spices, most notably cinnamon. When baked, it becomes a little crumbly, but generally dense in a good, breakfast bar way.
You'll be surprised by the flavor wallop that this humble looking sweet packs. The sweetness of the oat mixture, combined with the cinnamon, makes it taste almost like an oatmeal cookie. The fruit and nuts make it addictive like trail-mix, and given its weight, you could definitely pack this guy on a hike.
