Sugar Rush: Isola Galleggiante at Monello in San Diego
Even if you've stuffed yourself with salame, spaghetti carbonara, and one too many slices of pizza at Monello, there's still an appropriate dessert to end a meal with: the Isola Galleggiante ($8). In English, the names translates to "floating island," since the baked soft meringue is floating on top of crème anglaise.
The outermost layer of the meringue is crisp with crystallized sugar, while the inside remains fluffy, like baked egg white foam. It looks like a snowball of sugar, but is so light that it almost instantly melts in your mouth. I think I could eat three of them back-to-back, even after polishing off an entire pizza.
The crème anglaise is rich, eggy, and luxurious, while the thinly sliced almonds and fresh blueberries brought some bursts of sweetness and a toasty flavor to the dish. Now that I've tried it, I don't know if I'll ever be able to finish a meal (or even a round of drinks at the bar) without it.
