Ask The Pastry Chef: What to Eat at Levain Bakery, NYC

Levain Bakery opened its first storefront on the Upper West Side in 1994. And since day one, everything has been baked on site without preservatives or additives. As popularity grew, two additional locations opened—one in Harlem and one in the Hamptons.

Most people who go to Levain order the cookies. After all, the substantial, sweet discs are what the bakery is famous for. But what many don't know is that Levain's owners, Connie McDonald and Pam Weekes, actually started out making wholesale artisanal breads for restaurants around New York City.

It's no surprise, then, that when McDonald and Weekes were asked for their list of Levain's must-try items, the list included a few breads. The owners had a hard time picking just 5 items—they said they don't make anything they don't love—instead, they've suggested a few items people might not be as familiar with as their famous cookies.
