I realize the point of going to Voodoo Doughnut is to get, well, a batshit crazy doughnut that looks like a voodoo doll, or is covered in cereal, or bacon, or glitter, or whatever. But much as I like crazy foodstuffs, I'm a little bit of a purist when it comes to my sweets. At the very least, when I see something with 'maple' involved, I get it. I can't help it! Call it a lifelong love affair with maple syrup, or an unwillingness to eat a bacon covered doughnut after a particularly hefty weekend of eating in Portland, but I passed up the crazy menu items for the McMinnville Cream.
The sweet, yeasty doughnut, covered in maple frosting and filled with Bavarian cream, was a good doughnut, to be certain. But the finishing touch—two eyes and a curly mustache worthy of a French painter—made the McMinnville just special enough to feel that I had done Voodoo justice. Because really, why order a doughnut when you can order a doughnut with a mustache?
