Pain Au Chocolat
Though the patisserie offers both plain and chocolate croissants, the pain au chocolat is more fun to eat—flaky butter pastry is looped over bars of bittersweet chocolate.
Like a cousin of a croquembouche, three puffs of pâte à choux are filled with vanilla custard and topped with disks of hardened caramel. The coux are united by a sheet of caramelized puff pastry.
Sweet and Savory
Cake stands and glass cloches hold a variety of treats including savory "pop tarts" made with honey baked ham and Swiss guyère cheese and Liege waffles which can be paired with the bakery's homemade preserves.
In contrast to the bakery's bright colors and young vibe, Pura wanted to offer sophisticated, elegant desserts like this dark chocolate cake layered with milk jam and chocolate mousse.
This dessert is pretty emblematic of Pura's pastry philosophy. Inspired by the movie of the same name, it's sci-fi meets fashion meets classic French dessert. A vanilla bean genoise cake is layered with raspberry cream and fresh raspberries. The hidden white chocolate mousse is infused with oolang tea for a hint of bitterness to contrast the sweetness of the white chocolate. Find yourself being strangely drawn in? That's because, as Pura says, "the raspberry is winking at you."
Order a Chloe, a Janet, and maybe a Rebecca—all of the macarons on the menu are named after people in Pura's life. Or try the Sebnem, the coffee and praline macaron is named after Pura's coffee-loving sister.
If you want just a nibble to accompany your coffee, try one of the cookies. The most unique is the Spiced Cocoa Nib Shortbread, which contrasts Pasilla chilis with sweet butter and crunchy, slightly bitter cocoa nibs.
You can take home a variety of sauces including dark chocolate fudge, butterscotch, burnt caramel with fleur de sel, and candied milk jam.
Pâte de Fruit
In a modern twist on the classic jelly-like French candy, Tout Sweet's pâte de fruit comes in flavors like Negroni, Raspberry-Fig Balsamic, and Strawberry-Orange-Cardamom.
Wild Strawberry-Vanilla Bean and Pluot-Orange-Lavender preserves are available for tasting at the bakery (try it spread on a Liege waffle) or to take home.
