Here on Sweets we don't need a reason to eat things like double chocolate chip muffins, but it's always nice to know that while indulging our sweet tooth, we're also helping change the world.
That's why we're excited about Cissé Trading Co.. Superstar pastry chef and friend of SE Jenny McCoy teamed up with Diana Lovett to create a line of gourmet baking and hot cocoa mixes that uses Fair Trade, organic cocoa powder.
McCoy and Lovett buy cocoa from small production cocoa growers in the Dominican Republic at a fair price, then they use that cocoa to create their mixes. Chocoholics will love the line, which includes treats like double chocolate chip muffins, double chocolate layer cake, and milk chocolate chip brownies. They also sell mixes for hot cocoa, though with a pastry chef twist—think, dark chocolate and cinnamon.
To get their project rolling and fill the orders they've already got from Whole Foods (where the mixes will be available in the fall) they've started a Kickstarter campaign. Delicious chocolate mixes that help support small farmers in the DR? Sounds pretty sweet to us.
