Philadelphia: it's not just for cheesesteaks, pretzels, and Tastykake.
No indeed, because there's a sweet morsel, little known outside of the city, that truly takes the cake when it comes to decadent eating: Philadelphia Butter Cake. What is this tasty treat? It's a rich, buttery cake with a gooey center and a yeasted dough base. Served in bar form, it's a cousin to, but not quite the same as, the famous St. Louis Gooey Butter Cake.
Butter cake isn't always the easiest food to find. It tends to proliferate in German bakeries, mostly in the Northeastern reaches of the city, the likes of which don't generally have websites or Twitter feeds. But it's worth seeking out, and here are 7 spots that I think are worth a trip.
Note: Many of the prices listed are for a tray, which include more than 1 serving.
