With New York City caught in the throes of a sudden, outrageously early onset of summer, I wanted a dessert that would be portable enough to enjoy outside. I also wanted a flavor that would be summery and refreshing but still remind me of the all too recent winter, a tasty illustration of the radical change of seasons going on around me.

Mango, for me, is a quintessential summer flavor. Tart, sticky, and sweet, it is the fruity embodiment of the warmth and brightness of summer. Cloves, on the other hand, are darker, spicier, and deeply autumnal. The two together? Perfect for a warm summer evening in early March.
