We Tried Ben and Jerry's New Schweddy Balls Flavor
Remember this SNL sketch back in the Ana Gasteyer and Molly Shannon era? The two were hosts of "Delicious Dish," an NPR-parodying radio show and in this yuletide-themed sketch from 1998, Alec Baldwin played their guest Pete Schweddy, the owner of Season's Eatings Bakery. It's been a while, but an SNL classic like that isn't forgotten. Ben & Jerry's just decided to release a Schweddy Balls flavor, now available nationwide.
The base is B&J's Fair Trade vanilla ice cream with a hint of rum, according to the description, and fudge covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls swirled in there. "Oh wow, these balls are really rummy"... "I got two balls stuck together!".. It was hard not to tee-hee-hee a little when analyzing the flavor.
That "hint" of rum might be less than a hint—it tasted like normal B&J's vanilla to us. But you get plenty of a rum hit from the fudge-coated rum balls, which get even rummier as you chew. Not sure what the exact ratio of rum balls to malt balls is, but some of us were forced to eat multiple spoonfuls before finding the other one.
Like all B&J's flavors, it's very sweet and most of the time you find yourself digging for the chunks, unless you want a bite of unadulterated vanilla in between. It probably won't become your new favorite B&J's flavor but the malt ball enthusiasts out there will appreciate it.
And it's worth watching the sketch again for good times. See below.
