Let Them Eat: Green Tomato Cake
I go grocery shopping at least once a day, every day. I've tried writing out recipes and menus and drawing up shopping lists for the week to scale back on the number of trips, but since I'm constantly doing those very same activities for work, I just can't get it together to do it for me personally. Also, I like to browse the aisles, caress the produce, eat the sample cheese and crackers.
It is on these daily jaunts that I figure out what I'll be baking next, so it's not a complete waste of time—I'm doing research, right? For instance, I saw some green tomatoes at the store last week, made the mistake of not buying them, went home, and promptly began obsessing about them. I really wanted to make a green tomato cake because I'd never made one and was seized suddenly with curiosity and desire. A Facebook cry for help and several frustrating phone calls later, I found the things and made this go-ahead-lick-the-plate cake.
The recipe is based on a favorite family cake; I've added green tomatoes and spices, then slathered it with a brown butter cream cheese frosting. And, may I recommend chilling it for a spell as a respite to the summer weather? It's delightful, it's delicious, it's de-lovely.
